Researchers at the University of Strathclyde have found that bilingual kids have greater mental agility and are significantly more successful than children who only speak one language.

“The differences were linked to the mental alertness required to switch between languages, which could develop skills useful in other types of thinking.”

Yet more proof that teaching your heritage language to your kids provides all sorts of benefits in life. Along with the additional career prospects and social benefits, bilingual children also do better in skills such as arithmetic, problem solving and creativity.

Of course you don’t need to have learned another language as a child – adults really can learn a second (and third/fourth/etc) language and still gain cognitive benefits later in life. Check out our reviews page for in-depth reviews of language learning software and tools which are very useful for adult (and child) language learners.

It’s never too late to learn a new language, but it’s also never too early – give your kids a head start in life by helping them become bilingual or more!
